I want everyone to take a moment and relax. We're going off track here.
I want to talk about he Pittsburgh Zoo, a place that has been in the news recently due to the tragic death of a little boy. The author of this blog will come out and say that she believes that this woman should've been arrested for child endangerment (at the least) however, it was deemed that not even 24 hours after this incident that she wasn't going to be charge. While that in itself infuriated me because there was NO SUBSTANTIAL INVESTIGATION INTO HER ACTIONS, this whole topic is another issue. We're going to talk about a different angle here, that being of the African wild dogs.
I am no expert on these dogs, the only things I know about them is this. A. They're rare B. They're not in to many zoos and C. They remind me of a skinny hyena. Now, these dogs at the Pittsburgh Zoo have been quarrantined (for thirty days) but we're coming upon the one month mark of this tragic incident. There is an uproar started (in most part by KDKA out of Pittsburgh) that these dogs should be removed from the zoo. One radio talk show host (Marty Griffin) has seemed to make it his mission to get these dogs out of the zoo becasue, according to him, "It's always going to be a freak show there and people will just go to see where the boy died."
I hate to tell you this KDKA and Mr. Griffin, that fact is never going to change with or without the dogs.
My contention to you is this, no media outlet or specific talk show host, should have such power that they deem what is right for a specific place. The zoo itself should be able to make that decision with fear of any backlash. To tell you the truth, I don't see the problem here. Yes, it's sad that a little boy died but the zoo nor anyone who enjoys it should be deprived from the benefit of seeing a rare animal because the 'media' thinks its a good ide and because a woman does not want to own up to her own carelessness.
This whole incident was bought on by a mother's carelessness, agree with me or not, you don't put a kid on any kind of railing. You just don't do it. They're zoo animals, they're in their for a reason and the mother of this kid and her family and the media have no right to decide what I should be able to see at any zoo.
